Inspiring the Next Generation of Cancer Genomics Researchers at The Horvath Lab

This year, the Horvath Lab proudly hosted five exceptional interns selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants. Four interns joined us on-site and one participated virtually, bringing fresh perspectives and enthusiasm to our research environment.

We were delighted to welcome Alyssa Yao (Pomona College), Colleen Muñoz Duggar (University of Chicago), Maya Ensley (Washington Liberty High School), and Nicole Vassilev (GW Milken InstituteSchool of Public Health).

Together, they explored the cutting edge of single-cell genomics — from learning scRNA-seq fundamentals and visual analysis in Cellenics to building pipelines in Seurat, annotating cell types with Azimuth and scType, and applying CopyKat to distinguish malignant from non-malignant breast cancer cells.Their work not only enhanced their own skills at the intersection of biology and computation but also advanced our lab’s mission to better understand tumor heterogeneity and support precision medicine.

Hosting these talented students was an immensely rewarding experience — their curiosity, sharp questions, and energetic spirit enriched the Horvath Lab and made this internship season truly inspiring.
